I was stationed at Giebelstadt AAF and on pay days we would ride the bus to Leighton Barracks. Watch a movie or go eat at Burger King. If you wanted to go buy some new uniforms you had to walk down a long hill to another little outpost.

Welche Erkenntnisse kann aus folgenden beiden Tatsachen gewinnen. 1) Der Nazi Kommandant wollte nicht kapitulieren und keinen Zentimeter der Stadt den Alliierten übergeben. Vielleicht wollte der Nazi Kommandant die bereits verlorenen Deutschen Gebiete mit den getreuen Deutschen in Würzburg wieder zurückerobern - koste es was es wolle. 2) Die Alliierten haben kurz vor dem Ende des 2. Weltkrieges - nachdem die Niederlage des Nazi Regimes bereits klar und die verbrecherische deutsche Wehrmacht bereits besiegt worden war, eine Stadt in der 99,9% der Menschen nur Zivilisten waren und damit ohne militärischen Grund - total zerstört und dem Erdboden gleichgemacht. Was für Schlüsse kann man ziehen, wenn man diese Situation vom 16. März 1945 in Würzburg mit der heutigen Situation in der Ukraine vergleicht?

Ich bin 49 geboren und in der Sanderau aufgewachsen..Die Ruinen in der Weingartenstrasse waren unsere Abenteuer Spielplaetze..Das Grauen der Realitaet kam uns erst spaeter zu Bewusstsein !

My dad was stationed in Leighton from 1981 to 1984. I went to Wurzberg Elementary 4-6. This brings back so many, many fond memories. Mr. Peterson, Mrs. Wendt, Mrs. Young. All wonderful teachers. ❤. Small choir. Friends made. Friends left. 😢. Thank you for sharing.

Nach dem meine Mutter mit mir die Wohnung in Oppeln O/S vor den russischen Angriffen verlassen hat und zu Ihren Eltern auf das Land zog, ist das Wohnhaus in Oppeln den Bomben zum Opfer gefallen. Das einzige was meine Mutter nach 1945 dort noch retten konnte war die ausgeglühte Nähmaschine. Thank you for sharing! I was a teacher in the elementary school at Leighton from 77-82 and married a chaplain based at Emery. Some of my favorite memories are from Wuerzburg!

I lived in Skyline, 118 R-8, from 1955 until 1958. My memories of walking from our building across the open space over to George Washington Elementary School are vivid. Wurzburg was a great place to be for this grade schooler back in the 50s. Thanks for posting this.

Hello Roland, Happy New Year! Hope you are well. We spoke before. Trying to get more information about the former U. S. Hospital in Wurzburg, hard to find anything here. You show it in this video. I was born there in 1966 when my dad was stationed there in the Army.

As I'm typing this, I am at Leighton now. I am currently stationed at usag ansbach, I came to wurzburg for the first time. Didn't intend or know about another us army garrison here. I see what looks to be army barracks so I did a UA-cam search and here I am. Us garrison Ansbach is 6 (really just 3) bases, urlas/shipton, bleidorn/barton, katterbach/Bismark. Bismark is mostly empty, mostly just german workers there. But it's been recently announced it will be fully operating like it was in the cold war. A new air defense unit will be standing up there. Also urlas didn't exist until 2012 and shipton was vacant until 2018. So American military is once again growing in germany. I suppose Leighton if it was still opened would also increase in use today.

Thank you for the memories , I lived in Giebelstadt 1961-64. With my Husband, A1C Sol Climan, Shopped at the PX, had a baby in the hospital, worked as Education, coordinator for U of Maryland courses, and had every airman who had not completed H.S. take the GED, was young enough not to realize there were procedures, I just made appointments for the men and informed them when to come to my office. Giebelstadt AFB got recognized by USAFE General Curtis Lemay for the highest completion rate.

Mom and her family lived in wurzburg. My uncle was a dentist in town. He also loved to fly. He had a Piper, Cessna, and glider at schenkenturn, next to the old Nike missle base. Can't wait to visit my aunt.

I'm a RN and worked as a GS Civilian RN in the newborn nursery at the American hospital when my ex-husband was stationed there. We were only there for not quite a year from 93-94' , as we had to be transferred from Dolan Barracks in Scwabisch Hall when it closed in June of 93.

At 84 yrs of age, I do remember those terrible days, month and years. Many, many buildings were still I ruin in 1953 in Wuerburg when I rode my bicycle from Main Kai (next to Wahlfisch Restaura )to Mozart Schule.
